Nick Diaz showed a tremendous of amount of skill, tenacity and sheer aggression to defeat Frank Shamrock over the weekend. It’s a very impressive win--Shamrock is a tough opponent who has a ton of heart and ample skill and experience under his belt.

While Diaz threw out plenty of smack talk leading up to and even during the fight, he was very respectful after the bout as he picked up Shamrock, shook his hand, hugged him and raised the arm of the San Jose native. Diaz even apologized after the bout to Shamrock for the fighting words he threw at him, and Shamrock, who enjoys the pre-fight banter himself, was quick to accept that acknowledging it’s all business. That’s one of the greatest parts of MMA, no matter what happens before a fight, generally fighters are very respectful and honor one another a great deal after the bout is over. They realize how much dedication, sacrifice and hard work is needed to be a pro fighter, and have to give it up to their opponent afterwards.

In the fight itself over the weekend, the guard passing Diaz displayed on the ground was quite impressive. Shamrock is a well versed submission specialist Diaz was able to pass Shamrock’s guard and mount him early on and later in the contest was able very quickly pass Shamrock’s guard after a takedown and work him on the mat once more.

Diaz’s boxing skill was quite impressive as well. His reach came in hand and although he was jutting out his gym numerous times in a display of goading and taunting Shamrock, Diaz had some pretty good defense on the feet. An interesting quote that color commentator and former UFC champ, Pat Miletich, made during the event was, “Nick's boxing skills I think are as good as a lot of professional boxers out there at the top of their game.” That says a lot about the boxing ability of Diaz. Miletich has been around the game a while and is respected as one of the top MMA trainers in the nation.

Congrats to both Diaz and Shamrock for putting it all on the line and being a part of a very entertaining fight. Both of these fighters are always exciting to watch.
