Penn vs Sherk prediction for UFC 84

UFC_84_-_Ill_Will.JPG

Sean Sherk vs BJ Penn has the potential to be a classic 155 pound battle. I lean towards BJ in this one as he's always so dangerous in the first couple rounds of a fight. His killer instinct is at an all time high in the early going of a fight. The danger of standing with BJ is great, and on the ground it's terrifying. Sherk's best chances will likely be if the fight goes into the latter stages of the fight--rounds 3, 4 and 5.

Two big X factors in the fight are the standup and cardio game. BJ has been training hard and taking things seriously in training, but the big question will be how will he perform if it goes into the championship rounds? Can his cardio hang with Sherk's well documented and seemingly unending supply of stamina?

Additionally, how will Sherk's boxing fare against BJ's? Because he has been so effective using wrestling and ground and pound to thwart opponents, rarely has Sherk's boxing skills been displayed. Against St. Pierre they were shown a bit as the takedown of Sherk was stuffed. But the best display of boxing from Sherk was when he outstruck the lanky NIck Diaz, after Diaz was able to shut down Sherk's takedown attempts. Because both fighters have the ability to nullify each others' takedowns, the standup realm of this battle will crucial and highly intriguing to watch.

Tough one to call with certainty, but BJ is coming in as a favorite. His strong finishing ability gives him an edge in this one.
