Penn's striking leads him to victory over Sherk at UFC 84

bjpenn.jpg

I had a feeling Sherk vs Penn would come down to striking, and in fact it did. The whole 15 minutes the fight lasted was on the feet. I sensed both fighters' takedown defense would negate each others' takedown attempts. I was surprised Sherk did not shoot in for takedowns during the fight and stood the whole time with Penn. Both fighters were content to duke it out on the feet. Penn continually peppered Sherk with punches and while Sherk responded with shots of his own, but the reach disadvantage for him came into play and he was not able to reach Penn many times in the exchanges. Credit goes to Penn of course as well for being very quick and elusive in the process. And the flying knee and barrage of punches at the end of round 3 to seal the deal for the fight was a classic display of MMA striking and killer finishing abililty by "The Prodigy." Congrats to both fighters for putting it all on the line in a tough battle for the belt.
