"The Phenom" is back on track at UFC 103

Vitor Belfort scored a stellar KO win over Rich Franklin at UFC 103. It's a great win over a very durable and determined former champion in Franklin. "Ace" is an animal and has been on a good streak of solid performances against Dan Henderson, despite losing to the former Pride FC champ, and winning a decision over light-heavyweight legend Wanderlei Silva.

Nonetheless, Vitor Belfort showed excellent speed, power, accuracy and timing in taking out Franklin with punches in the first round of their bout, which was scheduled for 3 stanzas.

Belfort now gets a chance to drop back down to 185 (fight with Franklin was at a catchweight of 195), and challenge the current UFC middleweight champion, and seemingly unstoppable force in Anderson Silva. This is the second time Vitor has been called on into the UFC and scored a title shot after a victory. The first being when he returned to the Ultimate Fighting Championship in the Spring of 2003 and scored a very impressively and brutal knockout of Marvin "The Beastman" Eastman, which rendered the fallen Eastman with one of the most brutal gashes a man has suffered in the sport of mixed martial arts. After the victory, Belfort would get a shot at light-heavyweight champion Randy Couture, and successfully win the 205 pound strap.

This time around it will be one heck of a challenge for Belfort. There isn't too many instances where Belfort walks into the cage and finds himself up against a superior striker, but you have to give the striking edge to Silva, who has displayed some marvelous knockout ability and some incredible accuracy, power and mind bending Muay Thai technique and head movement which has rendered opponents helpless, unconscious, and simply embarassed by "The Spider."

I can't wait for this fight. Both fighters like to strike, and both are very good at their craft. Two men from the home of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will likely use their fists, shins, elbows and knees standing up to decide who is the better fighter when they finally meet in 2010.
