Thiago Alves knocks off a legend in Matt Hughes at UFC 85

Thiago Alves' nickname "The Pitbull" is definitely an apt one for rising Brazilian welterweight star. Saturday night Alves stormed into the O2 arena in England and defeated Matt Hughes via TKO in the 2nd round. Alves' burning desire to be the champ at 170 is evident in interviews, pre-fight rituals, but shines brightest where it matters most--inside the cage. You could tell Alves was highly pumped up to get at Hughes as he frantically paced back and forth through the introductions like a man possessed. That focus and energy was channelled into the fight as Alves was able to avoid takedown attempts in round one from Hughes, and land some nice ground and pound. In round 2, it was a big knee that dropped Hughes to the mat and spelt the end for the former welterweight champ as Alves landed several strikes to the fallen Hughes before the bout was stopped.
With his hard work and solid wins over top ranked fighters at 170 in Karo Parisyan and Matt Hughes, Alves will likey be next in line for a title shot versus the winner of Georges St. Pierre versus Jon Fitch, who fight in August.
